Institutional Design
Implementing policy through tailored institutional design
Service Description
Colonial era laws tend to linger in legal systems and are often inconsistent with international law. They clutter up legal frameworks with mismatched legislations that are incompatible with post-colonial institutions and the developmental goals of post-colonial governments. In the Horn of Africa and Middle East and North Africa I’ve worked with government agencies and non-governmental organisations in resolving institutional fragmentation and incoherent legal frameworks. Through field visits, extensive consultations and a deep understanding of local customary law, my work has entailed harmonising customary and statutory laws to create legal systems that better coincide with reality on the ground.
